HALLOWEEN NIGHT WITH KEVIN & JIGSAW
Last night I went to see Saw 3 with Kevin. What better way to celebrate Halloween night than by being completely horrified and grossed out for a full 2 hours! It's a kind of tradition that Kevin and I have started where we make a point of seeing every scary movie that is released together. We often walk out of the theatre laughing at the ridiculousness of the films or being completely disappointed if we've seen a sequel because our expectations were so high. Last night we walked out completely satisfied and then some!
Usually horror sequels go for more scares and larger body counts to try and make the films bigger and better than the last. I've seen enough horror films to know what a mistake that is because it generally completely waters down the premise that made the original movie such a hit in the first place. This is certainly not the case with the Saw trilogy.
Each Saw movie really concentrated on telling the story rather than going for the easy jumps and scares by shoving as much as they could into 2 hours. Don't get me wrong, Saw 3 was plenty scary and very gruesome, but the the film was mainly psychological and full of genuine surprises. Most importantly, it did what the final movie in any good trilogy should do and turned everything you thought you knew about the first two films upside down. It also explained many things that were left unanswered and tied the three films together with one overall story arc. Now that's what a good trilogy should do!
"Two thumbs up, 5 stars, worth the price of admission!"
Thanks to my horror pal Kevin for coming to the movie with me and appreciating a good scare! My other friends, who will remain nameless, all turned out to be wimps and haven't the first clue what getting in the Halloween spirit is about. Yes, they DID dress up as women this past weekend, so I'll give them props for that, but Halloween is about horror and fear and blood and guts and alas, they just couldn't take it. Thankfully I have my pal Kevin who always comes through for these things ;-)
Halloween is now sadly over for another year. Time to break out the Christmas decorations I guess!!!
