LITTLE CHILDREN
I'm currently on movie overload and loving it. Last night Jo and I went to the premiere of Little Children starring Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Connelly. It was a good movie and I predict there'll be a few Oscar nods to go around. I don't know that there is anything really astounding about the film or the performances but there is a lot of early Oscar buzz, and sometimes a little buzz is all it takes (just ask any of my friends about this past summer!). There may be a nomination for best adapted screenplay, Kate will probably get recognition as lead actress, and I think perhaps Jackie Earle Haley, who played Ronnie the pedofile, may also get a nod for best supporting actor.
It was Ronnie's story that I was most captivated by. His was the dark sub-plot of the movie - the scary pedofile in the quaint suburban setting. I enjoyed that the movie took the time to tell his story so that we saw every element of his character. We get to see the other side of the "monster" through the relationship he has with his mother and you can't help but feel sympathy for him, and especially for her.
In watching his story unfold I couldn't help but remember something my mom told me after she met the first guy I ever brought home. She told me that she had been very afraid to meet him and didn't know what to expect (horns and a tail probably). But she said that the moment she looked at him she was fine because she realized that "he is just another mother's child."
